Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

Pantone Colour of the Year 2021 chooses two colours this year to symbolise unity.

American paint company Pantone is notable for its annual concept of choosing a colour to best represent the year, through a process that involves thoughtful consideration and trend analysis.

Since the year 2000, the Pantone colour institute has released its colour of the year, With each choice having its own story to tell. A meeting is held with representatives from various nations’ colour standards groups to decide the winning shade, with cultural influences in mind.

The chosen colour is referenced by a variety of fields worldwide such as the fashion and interior design industry in determining concept ideas and style choices. For their 2021 selection, Pantone opted for two very contrasting colours to represent the year.

Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray
Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating

Pantone’s Ultimate Gray is stern and signifies strength and when paired with Illuminating, a warm yellow tone, brings a stark contrast almost like light at the end of a tunnel. Pantone describes their concept as two colours coming together in unity, bringing hope and positivity.

‘A message of Happiness supported by fortitude.’

Their use of the word fortitude when describing their choice is very fitting in relation to the ongoing experience we are all facing throughout the pandemic with ongoing uncertainty. The definition of Fortitude is ‘Courage in the face of adversity’. Strength through difficult times. This year’s colour choices will resonate with many people and Pantone’s colour of the year continues to be a staple influence in the world of art and design.

We love these two colours and when combined, offer a bold look to any room, maybe a yellow feature wall paired with accent greys?

Don’t be afraid to include bright colours in your home, Pantone Illuminating is a bold choice, but when combined with more muted down colours like grey tones, it can add a unique and exciting addition to a plain interior.

Grey homeware is a trend that has kept its popularity in recent years, however from a time when almost everything was grey, we are seeing the trend evolve with other colours incorporated subtly as accent pieces, such as grey with sage green as well as grey and yellow.

If you’ve had grey interiors for while now and want to change it up a bit for a brighter look, here are a few pieces you can add to your home!
