Tell us a little bit about yourself, what inspired you to work in interior design?
Hello there! I am Emma Martin. I am the founder of Emma Martin Interiors. I am an interior designer based in Nottingham and I work on residential and commercial projects across the East Midlands and Spain. I had worked in HR for a few years and realised that I had always had an interest in interior design so it was time to pursue this passion. You could say that my first project was as a child when I decided to revamp my bedroom. I painted the door and window frame in black and matched a set of shelves also in black so that there would be a coherent look in the room. I finished off the design with a huge flower that I painted directly onto the wall. Thankfully my parents gave me total freedom to decorate!
What is your signature style
?
I don't really have a signature style as it evolves all the time but as I grew up in Spain I do feel drawn towards soothing colours against white walls to maximise natural light and I love all the options you can have with tiles.
Key trends to look out for in AW'20
- Authenticy: integrating old and new to create your own uniques space.
- Botanicals and biophilic design: still going strong especially in the current climate as it supports our well-being
- Multifunctional spaces: again due to current climate there will be an increase in spaces needing to be multi-functional to accommodate a lot of people working from home. This is a trend which is going to be in place for a long time.
What are you working on at the moment?
I have a few projects I am working on including a lovely family home, an apartment needing a complete revamp and a transformation of a kitchen/living space.
Quick fire questions!
- Rug or Lamp: both! a floor lamp allows you to enjoy your "winding down" moments and with a rug it's usually the bigger the better
- Pastel or Bright: depends on the space, I naturally go for a few colourful accents to add interest
- Texture or Pattern: can I choose both?
- Wood or Glass: natural wood
- Minimal or Maximal: maximal of course!
