Currently trending: Get the Japandi look

With The 2020 Tokyo Olympics drawing an end, we couldn't be more proud of the success of Great Britain, bringing home the gold and the phenomenal performances by the likes of Adam Peaty, Tom Pidcock and Laura Muir. With the triumph of Britains best athletes competing in one of the most vibrant cities in the world, we felt inspired to take a look at Japans growingly popular interior design trend. The mashup of two classic styles,  Japandi design is a delicate combination of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian simplicity. This interior design style focuses on clean lines, natural textures like wood variations as well as functionality and balance.
Japandi is a fresh new take on the long-loved Scandinavian approach to simple, chic home design. We love seeing this look grow more popular and there is plenty of inspiration out there. We spoke to interior design expert Sharmeen Shahid to get her insight into this beautiful blend of two widely loved interior styles.

Japandi Style, a perfect crossroad between the most famous Scandinavian design and the elegance of the Japanese Interior style. What I most love about this style is the warm and neutral colour palette and the use of raw, eco-friendly, natural materials. Both styles leave their own mark in the interior design world but combining them both gives us something extra special. Personally, I am not very fond of a grey space, so to be able to add muted pastels and deep walnut tones from the Japanese style to textural velvets from Scandi design would make a perfect minimalist interior space.

We love this trend so here are some ways you can get inspired by the Japandi look and begin to incorporate its traits into your home.

The Japandi colour palette

Within this style, the baseline colours are the wood tones that are the typical
foundations to the Scandinavian style. Muted greens, watered down greys and off-white tones can be added to create a Japanese twist on the classic style. The palette isn’t limited to these shades, you can experiment with accent colours like burnt oranges and ochres to compliment the other prominent minimal tones.

Bringing nature inside

One of the principles that both Japanese and Scandinavian design share, is the recognition of nature being an important aspect to bring into the home. Welcoming the outdoors in is what this combination style does best, and it really makes for a fresh, relaxing space. Try introducing some greenery and potted plants to a room, arranging them at different heights to create balance, and use a mix of shapes and sizes. There are many benefits to having plants around you in the home, plants naturally purify the air, and they can also boost the levels of serotonin in the brain!

Getting the balance right

Both Japanese and Scandi design use clean lines and a minimalistic approach to achieve and overall attractive look, with symmetry and space. When going for this style, try not to overwhelm your space by having too many bold, stand out pieces of furniture; instead go for items that are simple and clean and add personality with accessories like rugs and wall art.

Choosing your furniture style

Japandi furniture uses modern silhouettes and is sleek and classic in design. Focusing on functionality and craftsmanship, each piece should be sustainable and hard wearing, made to be long lasting and not just a temporary interchangeable piece. Complement the furniture with art and sculptural pieces to complete the look
