Creating Ultimate Moody Vibes for your Home

This month we are obsessing over the moody interiors trend. This sexy and interesting trend caught the eye of Sarah Aitken, Head of Brand at Olivia’s. ’The amazing designs from the likes of moody maximalist Abigail Ahern, romantic designer Luke Edward Hall and soft furnishing expert Malin Glemme, truly light up my creativity. Sometimes I find I fall onto the neutral's bandwagon (very on-trend may I say!), certainly in my main living areas. However, if 2020 taught me anything, it’s to just do it! So that’s what I am doing… in the form of a moody maximalist bedroom of dark tonal purples, rattan and plenty of textures.’

-Using dark colours

-Bringing darker colours into the home can seem intimidating and a big leap from your comfort zone but there are lots of ways you can pull off dark interiors without worrying about a space looking too dreary. Navy blue, burgundy, forest greens and browns are beautiful colours that can be alternatives to using black as a base. Don’t be afraid to experiment with these colours, even if they are gradually introduced with accents like accessories and rugs. A trend that has surfaced in the past year is painting the ceiling a dark colour, having the main walls lighter. This creates the sense of a larger space and isn’t as overwhelming as painting everywhere dark.

-Using both tonal and pops of colour

-If you have existing furniture which is lighter toned, try making a statement with pops of dark or mixing it up with rich textures. Dark green and navy velvets are beautiful and can be seen quite often as cushion and curtain features. Dark florals are also great for enhancing a moody look, deep floral rugs and wallpaper can be used in contrast to plainer, lighter colours.

-Be generous with accessories

When it comes to creating a dark, moody space. The aim is to lean more towards the maximalist approach to styling. This means making use of accessories to make a statement and knowing what kind of items work well with darker tones. Rich golds are great when mixed with dark colours, think dark forest green walls with gold candle sticks or lamp base, maybe using books as accessories too. It is all about creating a space that uses layers and dark colours to create a moody atmosphere, without being dull and dingy.

-Use furniture with dark woods

If you are wanting to completely transform a room, starting with a blank canvas and the budget for new items, it’s best to go for darker furniture instead of whites. Dark woods like mahogany and stained oak can be a great starting point to build from. If you already have lighter furniture and don’t want to start from fresh, try incorporating a darker item like a foot stool or side table, and use dark furnishings to dress the existing furniture.

-Go big with multiple textures

Textures in a room aren’t just confined to soft furnishings like cushions and throws, you can find thick texture in ceramics as well as interesting detail in wallpaper and furniture. Through looking at inspiration online, there is a lot of trendy rattan furniture that has dark wooden outlines.

-Chandeliers

Any light fitting that is central to a room is a statement piece and generally is the first to grab the eye. Chandeliers go the extra mile to stand out. They are classic and timeless and are associated with grand and elegant interiors. The moody vibes aesthetic follows the idea of being mysterious and classy, whilst still being warm and cosy.
